Final Project - Santiago Megalopolis

For some reason I can't get the tour to record anything but the zooming and panning of the map. Due to this I have included a jpeg that includes everything in the presentation to show that there is information available, it just isn't showing up the way that it is supposed to. I will continue to try to fix the problem, but for now I just want to be sure that there is something here to show for my work.

Update: 5/2/2014 - The tour still is not recording properly. I have decided to include screenshots of each important aspect of the project so that you may see what is in each kmz file. If you would like to download any of the files for your own personal use, please feel free to do so. All I ask is that you do not save changes to the site listed below. If you would like for your changes to be included so that others may have access to the information, please contact me on this blog so we may determine the best course of action as far as getting the info onto the site is concerned.

You may use any files listed on the other site. All I ask is that I be credited with the initial work along with anyone else who contributes.

If you would like to download the kmz file for your own personal use, please see this site and click on Chile Term Project2.kmz. There are other files there, as well. Please feel free to use these also. Again, please give me due credit for any work completed using the information that I compiled.

Exercise 8 - HDI for North America, South America, and the Carribean

Earth kept crashing when I tried to move the files from the countries.kml file to the HDI folder, so I had to rename the Countries folder to HDI.  This meant that I could not download the countries.kml file more than once.  If I did, it would have deleted the work that I had done previously.  Because of this, I had to change the border color for each country individually.  This is why there is nothing in the Countries folder.

Wednesday, Jan. 22nd - On what basis would you divide our region of study into sub-regions?

Wednesday, Jan. 22nd: We will discuss and do an in-class exercise to deepen and consolidate the
material covered in the Preface and Chapter 1 of the textbook; before class, do those readings, write
a response paragraph based on them in which you answer the following question—On what basis
would you divide our region of study into sub-regions?—and e-mail it to me as an attachment.

Regions of Latin America and the Caribbean

  1. Mexico
    1. Not really North America, but not really Central America, either
  2. Central America
    1. Guatemala
    2. Belize
    3. Honduras
    4. El Salvador
    5. Nicaragua
    6. Costa Rica
    7. Panama
  3. The Caribbean Islands
    1. Northern Islands (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Hispaniola, etc.)
    2. Southern Islands (Martinique, Barbados, Guadeloupe, etc.)
  4. The Caribbean Nations of Latin America
    1. French Guiana
    2. Suriname
    3. Guyana
  5. The Andean Region
    1. Northern Section of Chile
    2. Bolivia
    3. Peru
    4. Ecuador
  6. The Atlantic Coast
    1. Argentina
    2. Uruguay
    3. Pampas and Patagonia
      1. Including Southern Chile, even though it is not on the Atlantic coast.  It seems more similar to Argentina than it does to Northern Chile.
    4. Paraguay
      1. Again, not on the Coast, but it fits with Argentina - lots of beef, lots of flat land, etc.
  7. Brazil
    1. Could also be included in Atlantic Coast, but I gave Brazil its own region due to the language barrier, the economic differences, and the Amazon Rainforest
  8. Colombia and Venezuela
    1. I really have no idea where these should go.  I thought about including them in “The Caribbean Nations of Latin America,” but they don’t really seem to fit with the other countries located there.

First Post

I am taking this course because I am majoring in Cultural Geography.  My minor is Chinese Culture and Commerce, but I could have just as easily chosen something related to Latin America, as this is one of my main areas of interest.

I am a fifth year senior, and also attended LSU from Fall, 1999 to Spring, 2001.

See "About Me" at the top of the page for more information.
